Every year at Centennial park the city of Joliet, Il has its annual Father's day car show, the Joliet Mud Turtles 4x4 club has its Mud Blast at the same time. This gives the attendee the ability to see custom built near monster trucks, well built trail rigs, fancy and restored cars, dragsters, stock cars, and drag boats up close and personal.
Not only can you see them, but you can talk to the owners and find out how to build them. The cool thing about gearheads is that they're willing to share their successes and failures, and here they're accessible enough to do just that. The drag boats race in the afternoon, the mud pit starts at 10 AM but many attendees are there early, and the car show attendees arrive during the day. If you see something you like there's plenty of time to talk to the owner/builder, and in most cases the owner is the builder The entire event is free unless you decide to run through the mud pits or enter your car in the show. Do as I do and pack a cooler full of drinks, have a barbecued pork from Annabelle's and enjoy the day until you get burnt to a crisp. It doesn't really matter what you like, classic restoration, muscle cars, funny cars, rails, trail rigs, purpose built truck pull/mudders, all of the builders are there and willing to discuss the details with anyone patient enough to spend time with them. Luckily I'm more of a Rustoleum sort of guy so I don't have to deal with the intricacies of properly finishing a car or truck (some of the trucks are RhinoLinered inside and out), but if paint and chrome are your deal, it's there also. Be sure to check out the pictures of the car show and of the Mud Blast.
