Some call it a mid life crisis, I prefer to call it a return to my youth. I gave up riding 20 years ago because of wife, kids, responsibilities, etc. Mid summer this year I decided, much to my wife's dismay, that it was time to have some fun again. So I started looking for a practical comfortable bike. Maybe a Harley Road King Classic or a Heritage Softail Classic.
Then I saw it. It's not practical, it's a Softail Deuce. No room for storage, an uncomfortable seat but damn was it pretty. Long and low and sleek with the stretched out gas tank, cool custom (factory custom) paint and plenty of chrome to polish.
Most of my riding was going to be trips of a couple hundred miles on a Sunday anyway. 4 or 6 hours on a Sunday morning/afternoon with some friends out in the country. So why not have something that really looked good? They were even discounting it a lot, because it had been on the floor for a couple of years and they wanted to make some room.
The picture gives away the fact that I bought it. I like it. But there's a lot to re-learn after 20 years.I also don't mind riding 400 miles in a day or 900 miles in a long weekend. Maybe it's because riding is new again.
The deuce has some shortcomings in the long distance motorcycle category. The problems can be fixed with aftermarket bolt on accessories. More on this and the trials of re-learning my riding skills later.
